Its been about 3 months now that I have been a huge fan of Dave Ramsey and his “Cash Envelope system.” I have never been this excited and full of hope to try to get completely out of debt and make money do what I want it to do instead of living payday to payday. So now I have been paying cash for almost everything instead of using my debit card. I started out using just white mailing envelopes in my wallet and let’s just say it got ugly in there. What a mess.
Kelleigh Ratzlaff Designs has created a cash envelope system specifically for the Cash budget system. Each cute colorful set has 10 tab-topped envelopes and she will create custom categories based on your selections. They are laminated so they last a long time and there are tons of colors and choices to choose from. Plus she is constantly adding new ones to her Etsy shop.
She even let me try out one of her envelope systems first so I could let you know how much I like them. Here is a picture of mine:
I love it SO much. Great quality, pretty and its the perfect size for my wallet. I will admit when using the cash envelope system it is not always an easy task looking at how much you have left to spend and sticking to a budget. In fact its down right HARD. But when I look at my pretty envelope system it soothes me a bit and makes me happy. And when I am able to stick to a budget each month, know that I am in control of my spending it feels really good.
The tabs I chose for my Cash Envelope system are these:
- Food & Household 1 – Since I am new at the cash envelope system I am starting with a budget of $400 per month for Food & Household. I know I can probably keep it under $300 but wanted to be safe. I put $200 in this first envelope and $200 in the second Food & household envelope.
- Food & Household 2
- Personal- this is MY money.. its not a whole lot but its mine to do whatever I want with.
- Gas & Oil
- Family & Fun
- Sports – each of my 4 kids is in sports…(and gets expensive I tell ya..)
- Clothing
- Haircare – hoping one day to learn how do to hair by myself and not use this ever!
- Gifts
- Church/Tithing – have been adding any church activity reimbursement receipts to this as well..
