Free access to Ancestry.com this weekend

You can get FREE access to Ancestry.com from now through September 5th, 2011 (typically membership here runs from $9.99-$34.99 per month, so this is a great savings).  You can search to learn more about your family tree, find out about your ancestors and more.

This also leads me to share with you one of my most thrifty Christmas presents. One year I decided to use ancestry.com to research my family history as much as I could. I then printed the research out on paper and made home-made booklets {similar to the book pictured above} for each of my siblings and my parents. I tried to find as many pictures I could as well that year by asking my grandparents.  Not only did I learn many great stories about my family history but everyone LOVED that gift. They read it over and over again and most of them told me it was their favorite gift. It felt great knowing it was homemade, and that it didn’t cost me anything but time and paper.

So take a minute this weekend if you can and try to do some fun research for free on ancestry.com!8 Comments

  1. Christy B. says:

Thank you, I have been wanting to look at this website for awhile now.

  2. Thanks for sharing your gift idea. My family every year has a homemade gift swap and it gets hard to get creative sometimes. I think I will use this idea this year as I am sure my family would love something like that too.

    • You are welcome! My family one year just did a gift exchange for family pictures only. So each family just got family pictures that year and sent it to everyone else. (I liked that year….it saved a lot of $$). I like the idea of the family exchange all homemade. It would probably save a lot of money plus the gifts would come more from the heart.

  3. What bullcrap! As soon as you start searching it directs you to a page to sign up and PAY for the info, NOTHING is FREE!

  4. Really? I played around on the website for a while and nothing about paying ever appeared…it even says “free” on their website for this week. Thanks, Karrie!

  5. Worked for me!! It comes right up saying search for free. Haveing fun searching!

  6. Apparently the only free searches you can do are the immigration and travel searches. Anything else will ask you to pay for a membership.

So it is only partially free.
