So we now only have 2 chickens after our dog Comet broke into the coop. The kids and I are doing much much better after the loss, we are almost ready to get a few more new ones again.
The saddest thing is that Ginger lost her best friend Sweetie the chicken, and Lacey lost her best chicken friend too (Roxie). So now Ginger and Lacey have become close since they are the only ones left. They never leave each others sides anymore – probably because of the trauma.
Here are photos of Ginger and Lacey at 8 weeks old. These girls are getting big and we can even start to see traces of their waddles coming in. With there only being two chickens left at our house these two are super spoiled now.
Always getting held, talked to or sang to and I am sure they love it.
PS- I am in LOVE with fluffy chicken butts. I know, that sounds horrible. But seriously…their bums are SO fluffy and cute.
It makes me want to go on over and grab em. That does sound bad. Really bad. I think you need to be a chicken farmer to know what I am talking about, the rest of you will think I have officially lost it. Maybe I have.
I have a question for all you who have had chickens before.
I had 3 amazing readers leave comments sharing that I could have 2 chickens from their flocks – ( Seriously, you readers are the best ever!). One lovely lady said I could have baby chicks, one has some chicks that are around 4-5 weeks old and another dear reader said she has some that are the same age as mine are 7-8 weeks. I can only get 2 more, so what age should I get? I am concerned that if I get ones the same age that they won’t be as used to us? Will they be terrified when they see us coming since they don’t know us? I want to make sure our chickens are tame enough for my kids someday to take to the fair. But if we get little babies will our bigger ones pick on them? Thoughts? What do you think?

Hi there I am a new chicken owner and loving it. I have 2 turkens in my mix. One looks great with
Nice clear light pink skin BUT the other has developed a very red blotchy puffed up neck and not like water blisters either. He/she is all puffed up around his face and eyes too. Please, anyone, do you have a clue whats going on…he is beautiful and don’t want to lose him. Darcile

Just to make you feel better, we started off last year with 20 chickens and after a “chicken-tastrophy” with the pen being left open and the dog going in, we are starting this year with 20 new chickens… It happens!

Oh my goodness, 20? That would be SO sad….

Hi Karrie
We have chickens and it does take them time to settle in together. They have to make a new pecking order every single time one is added or lost. (Kind of reminds me of junior high school cliques). If the additions are very different in sizes this can get rough but probably manageable since there’s only four. It’s harder with big flocks; if you just throw in one new one with twenty the established ones will pick on the new one and it could be miserable or even die. We make sure there are some “safe” spots if we have to do that so the new ones can get some relief by just hiding out if they need rest. I’ve used old flower pots turned on side and with the opening just barely big enough for one to squeeze into – so others can’t follow in. If one gets picked till it gets sores then there’s trouble and I’ll intervene by removing it for a while and trying again later. Really, with only four you shouldn’t have too much trouble.

I don’t have chickens but my brother and his family do. First you are not crazy! My sister-inlaw has never been much of animal person but she LOVES her chickens. Second they got theres as adults from another family member and they got used to them very quick. The first couple weeks the chicks where a little cautious of the family but now they follow everyone around and come up to the sliding glass door and watch for someone to come out. I think whatever age you get them at the will warm up to you quickly.

I think that the fancy chicken bums remind me of the dresses that the gals on Gunsmoke wore or the gals in Western movies, fancy long dresses with layer upon layer of ruffles. Good luck.

That is so true, Sally. How funny!!

You are welcome to come pick out 2 here and one of the reasons I offered is they will be the same size. If you get a little your bigger chickens with “hen peck” them and there is a possiblity of a death happening :/ Just in their nature to establish a pecking order. Mine run to me when they hear my steps but I don’t individually cuddle everyone every day. Since they are still young, they will warm up to you and follow what your chickens do , in how they reguard you. I have naked necks (turken) barred rock, and golden laced waynedottes they same age as yours. Hope this info helps you. 🙂
