Today’s Thrifty Tip is to re-use your plastic grocery shopping bags!!
First off I will say I like to use my re-usable grocery shopping bags when I remember (remember is the key word there…). But often I forget so I come home with bunches of these plastic grocery bags. To be thrifty, I often use these little plastic bags for all kinds of odd jobs. Here are my favorite ways to use them.
:: I line all my little garbage cans through-out the house.
:: My husband will often take his lunch in a plastic bag.
:: You can use it for car trash bags.
:: Cat Box Liners
:: Use them to separate items in your luggage…for example you may not want your shoes touching your clothes etc.
:: I have my kids collect doggie-doo with plastic bags –make sure there are no holes though!
:: Take some camping, or to the beach/pool for bringing home wet bathing suits or sea shells.
:: Crumple the plastic bags for packing material when mailing items.
:: Store seasonal wreath’s in plastic bags.
:: Use them as plastic gloves..like when you need to mix ground meat and seasonings up or other messy stuff you dont want to get all over you.
:: Use them when you are painting…by storing your wet brush in them while you wait for coats to dry.
:: Of course you could just bring them back to the store to recycle them or use them again too!

Our food shelf and thrift store happily accepts clean plastic bags.

I use them to put my recycled plastic in for the recycle man on garbage day. This way plastic is not flying all over in our winds.

I will use my bags to package fragile items at Christmas.

I suggest Baggu bags. They are a big pricey for reusable bags but they fold into tiny squares that you can stick in your purse. I used to forget my reusable bags all the time. Also, at CVS you can earn extra bucks if you buy the reusable bag tag. $1 for every 4 uses (have to be over 4 days). http://www.baggubag.com

I keep mine in old kleenex box in bathroom for the stinky diapers! That way they go right into the can outside and no smell in the house.

I have used them to stuff things that I don’t care much about, like Halloween costumes. I made a big hat for Toad and Toadette a few years ago and that’s what I used. It didn’t matter to them at all that they were a little louder than stuffing and the bags were even lighter in weight than the stuffing would have been.
I keep a few in my diaper bag for stinky diapers too.
