I don’t want to be responsible for a diabetic outbreak… but I have just finished another price research project. This time it involved finding the best price for Halloween candy.
I love Halloween and giving out candy; its one of my favorite holidays. It’s also the time of year we see entire aisles full of candy for sale and grown adults like me skip through those aisles.
With all those rows of candy I of course had to find out what was the best price per pound. Was Costco the way to go? Or using the big one day sales some stores have? What about the bulk section at my local Winco? Was that a better deal? I researched and then found out all the prices per ounce and per pound at 5 of my local area stores including Costco, Cash n Carry, Walmart, Target and Winco. So now when I do see a sale I will know if it’s a great deal or not.
I broke down the research into chocolate individually wrapped pieces and non-chocolate individually wrapped pieces.
Here are the results.
Best Price on Chocolate Halloween Candy (Top 5)
So Walmart came out as the lowest price per pound for Chocolate Halloween candy — a.k.a. the “good stuff.” Some of the other Walmart bags of chocolate were a lot higher priced though so keep that in mind.
$2.48 per pound is the low price for chocolate Halloween candy without sales or coupons.
Now if you can find a big sale plus use some coupons and come out with a lower price per pound that would be amazing! That is why I do these research projects, so you do know your lowest base prices and then can try to find deals that are even better.

Best Price on Non-Chocolate Halloween Candy (Top 5)
Walmart came out as the lowest price per pound for non-Chocolate type’s of candy — the winner being smarties.
$1.63 per pound is the low price for chocolate Halloween candy without sales or coupons.
I also noticed that the bulk section at Winco was the second winner for non-chocolate types of candy. There was a lot of variety to choose from in the bulk bins at this $1.68 per pound price including:
- STRAWBERRY BON BON
- BUTTERY TOFFEE
- COFFEE BON BON
- RODS FRUIT
- ROOTBEER BARREL
- CHOCOLATE MINT
- PEPPERMINT
- ATOMIC FIRE
- TAFFY TANGY
- RAINBOW POP
- SPEARMINT
- CINNAMON DISK
- BUTTERSCOTCH
- FRUIT BON BON
- DAIRY DELIGHT
- JAWBREAKERS
- LOLLIPOPS
- CARAMEL TAFFY
- JAWBREAKERS
- DAIRY RICH CARAMELS
- ASSORTED LOLLIPOPS
- SASSY SOURS
- ASSORTED TOFFEES
- BUTTER TOFFEE
- DUBBLE BUBBLE
- LEMON HEADS
I was a bit surprised at Costco on this non-chocolate candy pricing. I thought they would beat out the others. But at least the Costco variety is the “cool” candy like Skittles and so forth. So it’s still a great deal to go to Costco too. It all depends on what you want to buy.

But what about Sales and using Coupons?
I did this research to find out what our lowest base prices are on Halloween candy. There have been times when I have been able to use a coupon with a sale price and beat these low prices per pound, so keep your eyes out for those kinds of deals. Take this info and try to save more, of course! You can find some Halloween candy coupons in your Sunday newspapers as well as printing them online. And watch your store ads this time of year as well for candy sales.

I always wait for the Winco Bulk sale-$.98 for a pound of candy. I do get the bags of candy, but love some of the bulk kinds. I never know when it will go on sale, and at the 10 lb limit have to make several trips, or have my kids with me to get their choice of a 10 lb mix.
Love that you did this, so helpful!
