A couple weeks ago I made some Homemade Honey Oat Bread. Homemade bread as a gift to a neighbor or friend is good enough on it’s own, but this week I wanted to make another loaf and make it extra special by adding a jar of one of my favorite recipes that I grew up with. Homemade Honey Butter.
Funny story- when we were kids, my mom made some honey butter and put it in an old margarine tub. For dinner we had hot fluffy mashed potatoes and gravy. We like butter on our potatoes, so naturally we grabbed the tub of margarine and put it on our potatoes. All us kids were gagging and telling mom that it didn’t taste right. She would not listen and made us eat every bite, the cruel woman! Later she found out what had happened and felt pretty bad but it gave us all a good laugh.
So I’m going to share this amazing honey butter recipe with you, but please be warned, it is highly addictive, may put you into a diabetic coma, and some, some might even be tempted to grab a straw and guzzle it down. I called my mother cruel earlier because of making us eat this stuff with mashed potatoes, but really she is cruel for introducing this delicious concoction to me, it can’t be good for my health. 🙂 What makes things worse, is just how easy this recipe is to make. It’s dangerous I tell you…..you’ll see.
Homemade Honey Butter Recipe:
Delivering a Jar of this stuff would be so great to receive on it’s own, but I loved pairing it with my homemade honey oat bread recipe. I ain’t gonna lie. For this weeks happy thought post, I decided to treat myself instead of deliver it to the intended recipient. I’m sorry, okay?! Woman’s, gotta eat. The hot warm bread that I baked, sliced and steaming hot, needed some homemade honey butter drizzled on it. We gobbled up a whole loaf and a whole jar in one night. Don’t Judge me people! I think eating the bread and honey butter myself was a very happy thought, and it did make me happy…. in the moment anyways.
Although this wasn’t delivered I still created a darling tag for the honey butter. I also made sure it matched the bread tag so that you could pair it and the Honey Oat Bread together. I think it makes a beautiful homemade gift.
Here is the free printable – just click on the image below or this link, and save it to your computer. Then print away!

Hi i tried making this and when i put it on the fridge, the butter, honey and cream started separating, is that normal? And its more liquid texture than cream.
Karrie says
That didn’t happen to me at all, so not sure why that happened to you. Maybe you didn’t heat it long enough, or too long? Not sure, sorry!

WOW! We’ve been trying honey butter recipes to serve at our wedding reception (over cornbread) on the 4th of July. Our search is over! I couldn’t imagine this being good with regular sugar, rather than powdered sugar. Wrong. The people who are saying you could just eat it plain are absolutely correct! I just had it on a piece of toast for breakfast. I may have also had a spoonful or two when no one was looking. Thanks so much for sharing this recipe! I can’t wait to give it as gifts sometime. The tags are absolutely perfect.

I just made this cuz I love honey butter. But mine turned out thin even after being in the fridge for hours what do I need to do different? Or where did I go wrong?

I made this butter for our annual Valentine Banquet for the grandparents. Not only was it on the table for the grandparents to eat with an assortment of bread, biscuits, and rolls at dinner, but I also made up mason jars of this yumminess to send home with them as gifts. It was a definite hit!!! My favorite was eating it on warm sweet potato biscuits…serious yum. My husband and kids have been eating it on everything. Thank you for the great addition to our banquet menu! It was delicious and easy, a win-win for sure.

Just made this tonight for Thanksgiving Dinner. Wasn’t sure what the cream would do to it, but made it according to recipe. This stuff is absolutely amazing! I think it would be ok to drink with a straw. Had to put mine in the refrigerator so I wouldn’t be tempted. Thanks for the recipe!

Do you happen to know if I could freeze this?
Happy.MoneySaver says
I haven’t tried this recipe specifically. I would wonder if the cream and butter in this recipe would separate. SO the taste would be the same but the texture may be off. Regular butter freezes nicely but it’s the addition to cream that I really wonder about.
Caroline says
How much does this make? Or how many regular size mason jars does it fill?
Happy.MoneySaver says
Close to 12 ounces. I used a 12 ounce mason jar to store it in.

Hello,
I’m interested in trying this recipe, but how long does it keep in the fridge?
Karrie says
For a week or two.

Hello, I was just wondering if I could use powdered sugar instead regular sugar? Would the results be different? I have both but I was just curious as to what you thought about it?
Thanks! ❤
Karrie says
It would be different I think.

I want to try this recipe as I’m looking for something to make for Xmas gifts. Because of the cream in the recipe I assume it needs to be refrigerated, but want to know how long it will keep, refrigerated.
Thanks,
terry

About 2 weeks! 🙂

On your honey butter receipt, can you reduce the sugar content and get a good result? If so, by how much….Thanks
Happy.MoneySaver says
I haven’t tried reducing the sugar in this recipe. Try it out and let me know what you think!
Mary says
Does this have a liquid texture to it or a buttery texture? Also, how is different from just basic butter/ honey mixture? I have made honey/butter mixture before & it is good, but I am considering this recipe.
Happy.MoneySaver says
It is more liquid when you first make it and hardens after you store it in the fridge. I think it is a creamier mixture and the taste will blow you away! 🙂
Erin says
That sounds really yummy 🙂 Thanks for sharing

I was wondering the same about canning the butter. Could you boil the mason jars & lids so that it would seal up and stay preserved for a while? I loved this idea and was thinking about making the butter for hostest gifts for my baby shower, but I didn’t know how long it would stay good for…??
Karrie says
All I know is my sister cans butter and she said it can store for over a year, but I am not sure. Canned butter could be dangerous..? I am a bit of an extra careful canner. But honestly I just don’t know.

I am new here but love everything I have seen. I especially love the printouts of the recipes to add to my homemade recipe book. I do have a question though, can I decrease the amount of sugar because I feel this is alot and already use sugar sparingly and with the honey that sounds awfully sweet. If so what amount would you suggest to maintain as close the flavor as possible. I have been looking for a good honey butter recipe but had no idea it had sugar added. We just love Fire Mountain’s (local resturant) honey butter but rather make it myself. Thanks!
Laurie Ann says
By the way, the packaging is really cute, and the honey butter looks divine!
Laurie Ann says
Anyone know how long this can keep? Could it be canned into mason jars?
Thanks!

@Mary: My mom says that Margarine does not handle the heat and reconstitute as well as butter, so I would say no because the texture would be way off.
Kari says
Mary, I would never use margarine. It is very unhealthy for you.
mary says
do you ever use margarine instead of “butter?”
Christopher says
Karrie–Quick question. Does your “3 sticks butter softened (1/4 cup size each)” mean 1/4 lb each? (A stick is 1/2 cup = 1/4 pound)
Karrie says
Oops, yep, I meant 1/4 lb. each – so yes in total you want 3/4 lb. or 3 sticks. Off to fix that..

Hi! I just found your website and I LOVE it! Thank you so much for sharing all your great tips, advice, and recipes. This will definitely help our growing family 🙂 Just a quick question about the honey butter… Does it matter if you use salted or unsalted butter? Thanks so much!
Karrie says
I used Salted, but I am sure unsalted would work perfectly fine too. So glad you like my website!
