I had never been “that” mom, the one that always has to have a perfectly clean spotless home. I always just loved having fun way too much. Plus my kids were just too wild. It has always been a never-ending battle to keep up with 4 kids, trying to do everything from cleaning, cooking, running them around for sports, shopping, couponing, reading to them, and just trying to find alone with them.
There were some days where I had the house super clean, but it only lasted for a few days (with me on attack mode telling everyone “don’t mess it up!” or “pick that up, I am not your maid” ect.). When the mess got too great, I would feel stress, and fight to keep up.
I know I am always happier when my house is clean. I love that feeling when you are done with your “to-do list” and your house is clean. When you are able to put on a candle and your clean house smells so good. I feel free for a moment – relaxed. I know I can go and read a book or play with my kids and have some peace. Unfortunately those moments never seemed to last long.
A year ago an amazing Mom shared with me her magical plan that really worked for her family. I’ve been wanting to tell you all about this amazing home cleaning routine but wanted to make sure it worked. I have tried my fair share of different routines, schedules and chore charts with no luck. Something always went wrong or just didn’t fit my schedule. This ultimate happy home routine really worked for me and it changed my life. I have less stress, I feel so much more accomplished and I am able to do the things that I have been wanting to do. This routine will work with families of all ages (small children to teenagers). Lets breakdown my own personal schedule first and then talk about my cleaning routine.
Truman Family Schedule
6:00am – I wake up and make a real breakfast for my family. You can see my breakfast schedule below. Kids make beds before school and a specific child unloads dishes.
6:30am – Assigned child sets table. Everyone eats breakfast. While eating my husband reads from the scriptures and we have family prayer.
7:00 am – Teens off to school, I start my cleaning schedule and help younger children get ready for school.
8:30am – Smaller kids off to school. I am done with my list of cleaning to-do’s for the day.
8:30-12:00 – If I work out I do this now, and then start blogging (thus burning calories while sitting on my butt). Sometimes I go coupon shopping or run errands (if I had little kids I would play, read stories, make snacks etc.) Basically this is MY time to do what I want to do.
12:00 – 2:30 – Kindergartener comes home. Make lunch. Spend time with him (go to parks, read, play, walks ect.) Think about dinner here – if crockpot I get it started now. Or pull out a freezer meal – they make me really happy.
2:45 – 8pm. Older kids get home from school, homework first + snack. Evening routines start with soccer practices, ballet, wrestling, baseball, and all other mommy taxi type jobs. PS – I use the free cozi app to keep my crazy schedule – it’s amazing. Dinner sometime in there too, time depending on schedule.
8:00 – Bedtime routines. Kids must clean + pick up their rooms before going to bed. I will wipe down kitchen counters/dining table before bed and pick up my room. Stories, showers, teethbrushin’, prayers and bedtime.
My Breakfast Schedule
I used to just have my kids eat cereal a lot, but I find so much joy in making breakfast and having them sit down to read scriptures with me. Not only does it make them have a great start to a long school day, but I feel like a better Mom for cooking something special for them. It shows I care. Every day during Monday through Friday I make what’s on the schedule. On Saturday and Sunday its cereal, or make what you want day (aka – Mom’s day off..ha!)
Monday – Pancakes or Green Smoothies
Tuesday – Sausage, eggs + Orange juice
Wednesday – Oatmeal
Thursday – Homemade Muffins + fruit
Friday – “Fun Friday” – I mix it up here (Cinnamon rolls, Corned beef hash/eggs, French Toast, Bacon & Omelets, Waffles, Fruit Smoothies etc.)
Saturday + Sunday – Cereal (or aka – you are on your own..Tee hee. Hey, I like my days off from coooking.)
The Kids Chores
The kids chore schedule seemed at first like the kids were getting off easy. I was raised with a whole room to take care of (like a living room, or bathroom) every day growing up and I was thinking my kids should also be doing that. With all the evening sports and school taking up so much time or leaving them exhausted, I was often just doing it for them. Then I was at my wit’s end guilting them with the fact they hadn’t been doing their jobs.
I have 4 children. Their ages range from 6-13 but basically you just look at what your kids can do. I would start a little toddler with something like picking up their own toys, or helping with small jobs. I started my 4 year old off with just putting away silverware from the dishwasher. I also let my 4-5 year old clean the sliding glass doors with window cleaner. But as kids get older they can do more work. Once they get going to school though life gets busy and there isn’t as much time in the evenings as you would like. So with this cleaning schedule here are the jobs the kids do:
- Unloading dishes : One child is in charge of unloading all the dishes from the dishwasher for the entire week on a rotating schedule.
- Setting the table: One child is in charge of setting the table for all meals for the entire week on a rotating schedule.
- Making their beds in the morning. They don’t have to be super perfect, but they need to try. If I notice they didn’t make the bed, when they get home they get to “practice” making their beds 4 more times. 😉
- Cleaning their rooms before going to bed. They need to have it picked up.
- Washing their own laundry + putting it away. Every child has a laundry day. In each of their rooms they have a laundry hamper. Each of them gets one day a week to do their laundry from washing to drying to folding and putting away. I taught my 7 year old daughter to use the washer and I trust her, however my 6 year old son still needs so we do this task together. I think it’s important for children to learn how to do laundry all by themselves. I have also gotten rid of my “sock basket” by having everyone do their own laundry.
- Saturday – Deep clean one big room day. This is mostly so they grow up knowing how to clean. They have to clean one main room that they are assigned for a month or so. Examples I have used: Bathroom 1, Bathroom 2, Vacuum stairs + Hallways, Put shoes away. They also help with outdoor chores today if needed.
For my 3 older children I have them rotate through the dishes, setting the table and one get’s a week off (which they love). Also on my calendar is their laundry day. So my calendar looks like this:
Monica: A
Micah: B
Grace: C
Week 1 –
Dishes: A
Setting Table: B
Off: C
Week 2 –
Dishes: B
Setting Table: C
Off: A
Then repeat.. Here is what my chore calendar looks like.
For my younger 6 year old I have him unload silverware everyday for his main chore. For his Saturday chore he takes everyone’s shoes by the front door and takes them to everyone’s rooms. He is almost ready to learn how to unload the dishwasher too. So he does his part too!
My Weekly Cleaning Routine
So what is my routine you ask? Basically everyday I do a few daily cleaning items. I load the dishwasher, wipe counters and do quick pick up around the home. But everyday I also have a special room to clean that I focus on. I have my own personal cleaning routine printed up that I can check off each day. I make sure and tell myself I just need to do the room on my list today – which really reduces my stress levels, and makes me feel accomplished. Once I am done…I am DONE for the day! I have free time, time to do everything else I want to do. You will also notice on my cleaning routine there are a few items at the bottom of each day that are italicized – these are deep cleaning items that if I have extra time I will try to tackle. I try to choose one of them every week or two. Note: If you find you are spending too much time give yourself a time to work. I would say 30 minutes would be plenty of time to do your normal cleaning in that particular room. Also if you get out of your routine, just start on the day it is and begin again. Don’t worry about catching up if you miss a day.
Here is my Weekly Cleaning Routine – I am offering it up here FREE as a download for you! Just click on the picture to print it off as a PDF. If you would like it as a photoshop element file where you can change it around just shoot me an email: karrie @ happymoneysaver (dot) com and I would be happy to share it with you.
UPDATE!!! I have many skills in photoshop and blogging, but I do NOT know how to make a pdf form editable for everybody. So I asked Justyna over at her Etsy shop DIVart if I could pay her to do this, and bless her kind heart – she read the post and decided to do it for FREE! Isn’t she just so nice??
Here is the FREE Editable PDF My Weekly Cleaning Routine Checklist. Just click on it, then right click – save as and download it to your computer. You will be able to edit it under each category to your liking.
I hope you will get some relief from this schedule. Time is precious and its been a lifelong struggle for me to be able to organize it they way I want. This schedule has definitely helped me live happier and be less stressful.
Do you have a cleaning schedule that works for you or any other tips?

Hi Karrie,
Is it possible for you to email the template for your ‘My Weekly Cleaning Routine’? I love the layout of it and would love to modify it to fit the needs of my home. Thank you so much! Keep up the great work!

Hi Karrie,
My 4 kids are about the same ages as yours…6-11. I’m just curious at what time the kids do their laundry? After school?
Thanks for all you do!
Kristen
Karrie says
Hi Kristen,
It just depends, I leave it up to them. Some will throw it in the wash before school, then in the dryer right after school & fold. Others will do it after school. As long as it’s done sometime that day they have I am okay with whatever time.

Karrie- Can you send me a copy of your cleaning schedule that is not pdf that I can change around to fit our home?

Thank you for the printables! I just had one question about having the kids do their own laundry on their assigned day… So, you have their laundry separated already? We just had to move our 3 kids (6, 4, and 2) into the same room because we are expecting our 4th in late July/early Aug and they will be sharing a room till our youngest is old enough and we can split them 2 boys/2 girls in a couple years. So, for now I might have to keep laundry the same and just involve them more in the doing it/ folding it/ putting it away. Then have the boys do theirs and the girls do theirs on different days?
How old did you start them on chores? I’m looking forward to having assigned help on a regular basis… 🙂
Karrie says
Hi Karen,
Yes, I do separate the kids laundry. My two boys share a room and I have a basket for each of them, that way they can learn to put away their dirty clothes in their own hamper at bedtime. If you plan on doing the washing for them I think if you want to put their clothes into one basket and wash them together that would be great too. You just find what works for you. Then yes, they can help sort, fold and put away. I think when they each have their own its a little bit easier because you skip the sorting part.. and can tell them just to fold and put it away. 😉
I started my kids with a small chore like washing the big glass door or unloading just the silverware when they were around 4-5. Then gradually added more and bigger jobs. Good luck, doing this will save you so much time in the long run. It’s hard to start and keep up with a new way of doing things so keep pressing on. You can do it!

I can’t tell you how much I am loving and appreciating your site. I was instantly drawn to it once I discovered the homemade detergent recipe. I appreciate all the printables they are adorable and something I would do if time permitted. I recently came upon this cleaning routine and as a busy person like so many others I’m sure, this is so handy. Thank you so much for all of your hard work and the love you seem to put into your site. By the way I enjoy the recognition your give back to The Lord. Again I thank you.

Wow, thank you so much for the compliments! And so happy you like my website.

I agree! I have 2 small little ones 2&4 also my 3 nieces that were raising they’re 7,12,13 and I’ve felt so overwhelmed at times because they required more of my time than my little ones.
We have chores in place and now they can EARN a commission but only when they do their work right the first time. If it’s not then they still have to complete but the don’t receive the commission and the chore chart has to be checked off by me. I’m pregnant with Twins and am going through the nesting stage of thinking of everything that needs to be done before babies arrive. My husband will be at work and my nieces will be at school .So the thought of having 4 little ones at home by myself and nursing is making me want to find as much as I can on organization and freezer meals and implement this before I go into labor. I have no family here except those from church. We are not from here so, really asking an believing The Lord for help!
I felt lead by God to implement the commission part we heard from Dave Ramsey I tweaked it a bit for us. I notice my nieces they’re more conservative of laundry soap etc. when they have money that will be used to replace it because they decided to waste it.
To some I know this may sound harsh. But we are on a budget and they’re not used to structure. My husband and I are still feeling growing pains from not being organized for so long now, we have to take a crash course to make it work with 9 people in a 2 bedroom house! Your website is a huge blessing, I’ve been on it all day.
Praise God,

OMG Just read this right now – i think you’re a superhero 😉 where do I begin I have 6 children and it feel like my home is always a mess and like im losing control of everything – heeelp
Karrie says
Hi Ylem, I am not a superhero..ha ha…and I have days where I don’t always keep up on things like I should. I think we all do. Just start by making some sort of schedule. Get some paper and start writing what you would like to do – what are the 3 most important things you would like to do to feel successful and a happy mom. Then make sure those are on your schedule. I like my cleaning routine because otherwise I will get overwhelmed and guilt ridden if the entire house isn’t perfect. And even if you have had little ones around all day long, if you are able to deep clean that one room that you are supposed to do…and toys are already in it messing it up at least you will know it is clean. 🙂 Just stick to a schedule for at least a week and see if it works for you. Good luck! (You can do it – mom power!!)

I stayed yesterday (my whole afternoon :)) and did your schedule with little adjustments – I also put the kids to clean their rooms before going to bed – woke up this morning did breakfast – but my house at least wasn’t messy as I used to wake up to – thankyou soo much for inspiring me with your web page – I thank God for finding your page I really needed it.. – God Bless you!!!! 🙂 :-*

I have been using your routine these past 3 months and I LOVE it! It is totally working for my family – I have a few different things I do but overall this has made my life more stress free, and I have more time to do the things I love, like read books and play with my kids. And making breakfast is so rewarding, didn’t think it would be, but it is! Thanks again miss Karrie.
Karrie says
Awe, thanks so much. So glad you like this schedule and I agree about the making breakfast. It totally makes me feel like a great mom! Your comment just made my day – so thank you!

Does one child’s clothes for a week make a big enough load? Especially if they separate out whites, etc? Or do they do mini loads?
Karrie says
Honestly, I don’t think my kids have been separating their whites from their reg. clothes. They don’t seem to have a lot of whites. It does seem like they have a full load of clothes from thier 7 outfits and pjs and their towel.
Annie says
I really love your suggestions for the kids–especially the laundry idea. It seems like you have a nice balance between teaching responsibility and life skills and not overburdening them with chores.
anonymous says
Whoa. 3.5 of time to yourself everyday plus hours more with just a kindergartener. My house would be clean too! The list is neat but how do you only do one load of laundry a week besides linens? We have five kids (all at home all the time except two hour long activities for the oldest two each week) and laundry is a minimum of twenty loads a week when throw blankets, car seat covers, diaper bags, etc. are added up.
Karrie says
Hello – so when everyone has their laundry day, it doesnt mean that they only get to do one load. If they have colors and whites and want to separate, they can do that and do a few washes. They each have 1-2 towels that they use every day and wash with their own clothes. So once a week I do linens like blankets, sheets and wash cloths, + any other linens I need to do. Its not only one load a day, sometimes it is 2 or even 3 if needed.
Wendy says
I have been very overwhelmed with our laundry situation with four kids. It seems to always be needing to be done. I love the idea of each kid having a laundry day. When that load is done I am done with laundry for the day 🙂 I grew up with sorting everything by colors and washing towels separately. Do you ever have problems with clothes staining each other? Do you still bleach your whites separately?

LOVE it…Thanks for sharing. I just printed the calendar for my kids to do chores like dishwasher, table setting and laundry. I will have to give your weekly cleaning routine a try…might have to modify a few things but I think it will make my life MUCH less stressful.

Is there any way that you can send me your template for this checklist so I can change a few days around to fit my schedule?? 🙂 THANK YOU again for all your wonderful ideas.

I think this is a great way for the family to work together and to teach the kids responsibilities. Thank you for sharing. I will have to try this in my house. If only I could get the 2 yr old o pick up his room without whining 😉
Karrie says
Yeah, I have had a tough time even with my 6 year old with the room cleaning too. I have tried making him stay in there all day until it’s done before and he still won’t do anything – I think he just get’s overwhelmed and doesn’t know where to start. So now I just go in there with him and point to things he can do and it works well. I know someday I won’t need to be in there telling him where things go but for now I am still helping him learn.
Kathy says
Althought it has been some time since you posted, I know that getting kids to pick up after themselves is not always easy. As each of my 4 girls came along, the methods had to be tweeked to work for one and all. We had a few successful tricks, though, that even worked when they had friends over – everyone in this house cleans their own messes. My top two were:
1) Barney’s clean up song. They sing it while picking up toys, art supplies, snack messes, etc. We had toy boxes for each type of toy (legos, Barbies, etc.) so that they knew where to put it all easily. Though the songs change over the years, the idea of cleaning and singing still appeals to them all. When the song is over, the work is done – for the moment.
2) Commercial clean up. As the kids got older, the television was on often – different kids likes different shows. IF the TV was on, or a much loved show were coming on and the room had items out of place, they would spend commercial time cleaning up. By the end of the show, the room would be empty of kids AND clutter. (We stil use this on weekends even though I only have 2 young enough to live at home still. Even my husband and I will do this on the weekends – even during football season!)
I found that making it fun, giving specific expectations (The coffee table must be cleared of snacks and “junk” before you can watch again) worked great. My older daughters, now on their own, still use the commercial cleanup in the evenings and on weekends – singing at the top of their lungs. Their boyfriends don’t mind a few minuets of picking up and their places are CLEAN!
Karrie says
That is so cool Kathy, great ideas! We love singing in our house too.
Dorothy says
I like to take one day a week and deep clean (on Monday’s). Then I get the rest of the week off from doing any deep cleaning. All I need to do is basic pickup and dishes/laundry. I love your printable though, I might have to try it your way for a bit. Thanks so much.
Karrie says
I like that Dorothy – I have known friends that do it your way too and it works for them. And I have tried it that way too – and for my messy ones it lasts about 2-3 days and then get’s nuts again. I think I am bad about keeping up on it telling myself – oh I already did my work, so I like to do nothing instead ha!! So happy though you found something that works for you!

What about us working mom’s that have to work?
TM says
I always wonder when people ask this question. As if the cleaning will magically disappear just because you have to work outside of the home as well. You either get a maid, or you do something like the above, or have kids help out more if you have them along with the above. What I see is pretty efficient use of time for things that have to get done, whether you’re working or not. P.S. I use an extremely similar schedule, go to school part time, work full time, and take care of 5 kids.
