Having little ones can be a challenge, but having little ones with a ear ache is not tolerable. You know what I’m speaking of, those late nights when your toddler comes into your room, crying of course. She is in pain! She had a resent cold and now it has made its way into an ear ache, possibly an infection. You’re tired, but you muster the little energy you might have left to figure something out to comfort her. Light bulb moment! Run and grab one of your hubby’s unmatched socks, fill it with rice, tie a knot at top and nuke it. Then apply near the ear.
While this little warm comfort is hopefully soothing your child for a bit, now you can go ahead and have non crying time to make a natural homemade remedy for ear ache relief — garlic oil. I try to have this recipe on hand at all times, but if you don’t, the speedy recipe is at the bottom of this post.
When using garlic oil for natural ear infection remedies, make sure to find organic fresh garlic, such as at a local farmers market, but most grocery stores do carry acceptable garlic all year long.
Garlic can help with infection, it has antimicrobial, anti-fungal, and antibiotic properties. It has been used for both food and medicine for thousands of years. There are some people that take 50-80 garlic cloves in a day, for more severe illnesses. Wow! No vampire will attack them!
How to Make Garlic Oil
For this recipe, you’ll need a small glass container with a lid.
Ingredients:
1 clove garlic, minced
1/4 cup olive oil
Directions:
Put the oil and garlic in the container together and put on the lid. For best results, let the oil and garlic sit overnight for use the next day. If you are needing a quick remedy, you can use some of the oil in 2-3 hours. Strain out the garlic with fine strainer or cheese cloth. At this point you can add your oil to a little tiny dropper bottle (affiliate link) or just keep it in the jar.
Speedy method: Warm the oil slightly in a pan on the stove (not hot, just enough that it’s warm to the touch.) I’ve over heated the oil in the past and so, I just keep my finger in the oil until warm. If you over heat your oil you may just fry your garlic. You don’t want that to happen. Put the oil and garlic in the container together and put on the lid. For best results, let the oil and garlic sit for 30 min. Strain garlic out and use immediately as above.
When ready to treat ear aches and infections, use your finger to rub the oil around the outside of the ear or on the infected area. You may also use your finger to rub some at the entrance to the ear. You CAN allow one or two drops to enter the canal as well.
I have used this remedy to treat many “oncoming” ear infections. However, if you do not see an improvement or the pain/infection worsens, I recommend contacting your physician.
Just trying to make those rough nights easier on ya. 😉

I have had great success cutting an onion in half so the rings stay intact. Steam it until it is just starting to get tender. Wrap it in a light cloth and hold the warm onion on the affected ear. The onion may be reheated and used multiple times.
I have also taken about a 1/4 slice of onion about 2 inches long and cooked it until it was just flexible. Gently thread the onion into the ear, making sure there is still about at least an inch outside of the ear that you can use to remove it after the treatment. Cover with a little cotton to absorb moisture from the onion and a piece of tape to hold the cotton in place. Fever from the ear will dry out the onion. I have used the this at bedtime and usually the earache is completely gone by morning.

You’ll need to store it in the refrigerator. Garlic carries the risk of botulism contamination. Before using it, remove it from the refrigerator to let the olive oil come to room temp. Keeps for about 5 days. I’ve considered freezing, but have not done so, just so I don’t have to make it too often.
