Ok, so this post isn’t exactly a money saving post, but it is a sanity saving post, which is equally as important in my book.
Let’s talk about Hand, Foot & Mouth Disease (HFMD). Cue shudder.
This dreaded virus has been on the upswing in my community of late. And with school in full force now, you can bet that number is just going to keep climbing higher. There aren’t any medications you can take to help with it. Most doctors will you tell you to just wait it out until the symptoms subside, which can take up to 10-14 days.
While there are many variations of antiviral remedies, I’ve found that the following treatment works best for my family:
Elderberry Syrup
Elderberry is a true gift of mother nature. It is the ABSOLUTE BEST immunity booster I’ve ever come across. While a little pricy, it’s by far worth it’s weight in gold, rubies, and pearls combined. Because I’m a wannabe “prepper” (can we still be friends?), I keep this stuff in my food storage because I’m pretty sure it will prevent me from catching whatever Bio-Terrorists throw my way. It’s that awesome. I have never ever gotten sick when I’ve taken this stuff. And that’s saying something because usually if there’s a sick bug within 3 miles you can be sure I’ll get it. Until I discovered Elderberry, that is.
Elderberry comes in syrup or tincture form. I’ve even seen lozenges made from it. My kids prefer the syrup because it tastes like candy, and who doesn’t like candy? Give 1 teaspoon, 3 times daily to your child when you know they’ve been around a lot of germs. If you’re looking for a great maintenance immunity booster and not fighting any germ in particular, you can give them 1 teaspoon per day. Not a bad idea as school (aka germ fest) begins. You can use each treatment concurrently. When any one of your children start showing symptoms there’s no need to wait to treat your others. The best time to nip any virus in the bud is before symptoms start appear.
Now if buying this stuff online or in stores has you cringing – I have great news! I have created my own version on HOMEMADE ELDERBERRY SYRUP!

How about you? Have you had to fight the dreaded HFMD? What worked best for your family? I’d love to hear any and all ideas!
