This vintage Apple Brown Betty Recipe is an american classic. Minimum ingredients and time, leaves you with this simple, yet delicious textured dessert! - happymoneysaver.com

Despite the existence of modern desserts, sometimes (especially on chilly autumn evenings) you just get craving for some of those simple, satisfying and saturated sweets – that’s when granny’s recipes come in handy.

One of the latest recipes I pulled out of the old recipe box, is an American classic, an Apple Brown Betty Recipe – another variation of apple pie you can make from scratch without Le Cordon Bleu’s cooking skills. Just a few ingredients and 50 minutes of baking, separate you from this crunchy mouthwatering dessert. Let’s get started!

Ingredients:

3 cups dried bread crumbs
3 cups sliced tart apples
1/3 cup brown sugar
1/3 cup white sugar
3 tbsp butter
1/2 cup water
1/8 tsp nutmeg
3/4 tsp cinnamon

Preparation

First of all you should peel, core and slice your tart apples. Leave all slices in a bowl of cold water with some lemon juice in it. This trick will prevent apple slices from getting brown. Mix brown and white sugar with some ground cinnamon and nutmeg.

Next Sprinkle the apple layer with the sugar mixture and dot with butter.

Repeat all the layers, pour water over apples and spread last cup of breadcrumbs on top.

Cover Brown Betty with foil to prevent the top from getting too brown and place dessert in pre-heated (350F) oven for 50 minutes. After half an hour Remove foil and continue cooking. Remove pan from oven and allow to cool down a little before eating. Having a burnt tongue feels no bueno!

What did I think of Great Grandmothers Apple Brown Betty Recipe? I thought it turned out awesome! Minimum ingredients and time and left me with this simple, yet delicious textured dessert!  The crunchy bread crumbs complemented the soft and buttery caramelized apples and I think it is the perfect dessert for this time of year! You know it’s good when you eat it for breakfast the next day… am I right?!

And things got even more exciting when I topped my Brown Betty with a dollop of ice cream! Whipped cream works great too! I really enjoyed this old school dessert. It is the perfect fall treat!

This was one of the recipes we made in 7th grade cooking class circa 1968, but we used cubes of stale bread, not bread crumbs. Sooo yummyDiana
