Today we’re making our very own poo pourri recipe from scratch…. because everyone poops! Or so says the classic children’s book. And because we’re talking about bodily fluids (solids), I’m really feeling a need for my inner 9-year-old scouting self to let the potty jokes fly. That’s what happens when you’re the local Cub Scout Bear leader, I guess. Join with me, this is a safe place.
Every old wench has her own special stench.
We all stink up the loo with our own distinct…
Poo Spray. The most craptastic stuff you’ve ever had the displeasure of needing.
I’ll spare you the rest because it only goes downhill from here.
So, this year for Christmas I bought my husband his own little bottle of poo pourri fragrance spray for the bathroom. He opened it and laughed and I laughed and then it got all awkward and he was like, “What an awesome gag gift!” and I sort of stopped laughing and was like, “Gag gift, nothin’! This is real. REAL!! My years of suffering have finally come to an end!!”
And then it had a permanent place of honor in our bathroom. Anyway, after experiencing this little magic in a bottle I can safely say he’s a fan too.
Poo Pourri Ingredients
After I, ahem, put it to use, I thought I recognized a certain favorite smell: essential oils!! After researching it further, I discovered the poo pourri ingredients are basically comprised of essential oils, alcohol, and water all gussied up in some pretty brilliant packaging. Translation: perfect for an easy DIY’er project.
These poo pourri ingredients work because the essential oils create a physical barrier, trapping the stinky smells below. Basically, you could have a chili cheese dawg blowout nightmare in the bathroom and no one would ever know. EVER. Is that incredible or what? Where was this during my dorm days?
So, I got to work in the lab, errr.. kitchen and came up with a perfect copycat clone.
I’ve had family members try both products (original and homemade) in a double-blind test and the results clearly indicate the DIY is just as effective as the original. In other words, we use them interchangeably and they both work great.
I am a huge fan of DoTerra pure essential oils in all my DIY projects and for health too. The oils they use for the poo pourri ingredients are bergamot essential oil, lemongrass essential oil and orange essential oils. However, I have used all kinds of oil combinations such as lemongrass and peppermint, or lavender and orange. During the holidays I even use a pine smell. If you are interested in buying some of these pure essential oils you can order some here from me.
So, the cost breakdown.
z
DIY Poo Pourri recipe vs Original Price Comparison
The original big brand costs $9.95 for a 2 oz. container. And that’s not including shipping. That’s $4.98 per ounce.
Our homemade poo pourri recipe version costs the following:
- rubbing alcohol: $.02 (At $2.29 per 16 oz bottle)
- 30-40 drops my favorite brand of essential oils: around $.50 depending on oils used
- Water: Free. Sure, I pay my water bill every month, but it’s a set amount so my bill would be the same whether I make this spray or not.
Total Cost: About $.52 for a 3 oz bottle. Or $.17 per ounce.
You guys. That’s more than a 96% savings!!!!!! And we didn’t even include shipping! Surely if that isn’t the definition of a Happy Money Saver moment, I don’t know what is.
I think this would be the perfect something to leave in a guest bathroom. Isn’t it the worst to have the #2’s hit while you’re at someone else’s home? This is right up there on the essential hosting needs list. Your guests will thank you. And maybe you’ll thank your guests when they put it your poo pourri recipe to use. Win-Win!
DIY Poo Fragrance Spray for the Bathroom
Instructions
- Pour rubbing alcohol in a 3 oz spray container and add essential oils. Add water to fill the container. Give it a good shake and you’re ready to go! I’ve found 3-4 sprays is enough to cover the bowl and trap all of the stink particles below.
- Add water to fill the container.
- Give it a good shake and it's ready for use.
TO USE
- Before you go poo in the toilet, spray on top of the water 3-4 sprays which will create a film, trapping the poo smells after you go. Then do your business and flush.
Let me know your favorite oil combinations—I think it would be fun to create different smells for each season. Summery citrus, woodsy fall, and cinnamon spice for winter. The combinations are endless!

Thanks for sharing! This sounds so easy, the hardest part will be convincing my husband to actually use it!

This stuff works so great. We keep it on our office for our uhhhh….smellier people. I love it, so I am looking forward to trying a less expensive version!
violetrose says
I know this is a good solution, but rubbing alcohol is bad for the environment.

If you don’t want to use rubbing alcohol, use vodka instead.
DeeGee says
Lol
becky says
How about vodka instead of rubbing alcohol?
Susan says
Actually, Isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) is NOT toxic to the environment at all, and neither is Ethyl alcohol which is in vodka. Especially in these very tiny amounts!
Eileen says
I’m curious as to whether it would be a good idea to spray it in preparation for guests. Is there any problem with it sitting a while? One of our friends has a problem and has been known to leave the bathroom less than fresh.
Happy.MoneySaver says
Great description–love “less than fresh!” 🙂 I haven’t tried letting it sit for too long but maybe you could talk it up about how amazing it is and then have it on the throne ready for use! I always appreciate a great smelling toilet so I say give it spray and see how it goes!
jcoop says
I spray it in every morning, freshens the entire room and still works when needed!
Isabel says
So, does this cause a film to form around the bowl, does it make to where you have to clean the toilet more often?
Happy.MoneySaver says
I haven’t had a problem with film in the toilet bowl. But I do know when a bowl smells nice, I am more likely to clean it more often! 🙂
Jeanelle says
I love this stuff and have made my first batch. I am also having trouble with the spray bottles, and I have used several different kinds. After a couple days it is like they get clogged and there is no getting it spraying again. Does anyone have any remedies or suggestions? I have the actual stuff too, and it doesn’t clog, so I can’t figure it out.
Jenny says
Hey Jeanelle! I found a spray bottle similar to the one Karrie used at Target and I haven’t had one problem with it clogging. I found it in the travel section for $1. Hope that helps!
sandy says
you can use eye droppers or bottles like eye drops come in only bigger size you don’t have to use spray bpttles.
Kate says
Thanks. I was wondering if an eye dropper would work.
Denise says
Will using an eye dropper disperse it well enough or will it just sit in a big drop on the water surface?
Lisa says
I think drops would work. I use a product called “Just a Drop”, that uses two drops. It disperses evenly. I don’t want people to have to get so close to the bowl to spray. I will definitely try it!
Kay says
Where do you get your spray bottles? I have been looking in stores everywhere (Canada). Want to get some that are cheap. Keep cost down.

Where do you buy the essential oils
Happy.MoneySaver says
Here is a great start to buying DoTerra essential oils! Other brands are offered at Whole Food stores, most natural food stores and online including Amazon. They will change your life! 🙂
Jane says
I’m curious how you do the math on the essential oils? When a small bottle is $20 how to you know you only used 50cent worth of it with 30-40 drops?
Happy.MoneySaver says
I think it depends on what brand of essential oils you use. This was made with some essential oils my mother gave me before we switched over to DoTerra and it worked great! If you use a higher quality oil it may be a little more expensive but still a great deal!
Wayne Dyrness says
Math is 600 drops per liquid ounce (actually 591.471 drops/oz, I am rounding up). $20 divided by 600 is approx .03 a drop. If you use 20 drops, your cost is $0.60 cents. If you use 40 drops, your cost is $1.20.
Wayne Dyrness says
I am, of course, basing the above math on the cost of $20.00 that Jane provided.
Sue says
If you use doterra oils they range from $0.07 per drop to $1.60 per drop, not including Rose….just depends on your source but I think they were just trying t o give you an idea, not a contract.
Moa says
Math!

Made the DIY poo pourri and I have to say it smells great and works even better. Thanks so much!!!
janet says
Awesome! I’ve been waiting for someone to come up with this DIY poo pourri. Thanks! 🙂
Anita Sharp says
This is great!! I will hunt down some essential oils and get to work…Ummm….One question….Does one spray the bowl before or after relieving oneself?
Karrie says
Before! 🙂
Michele Service says
You squirt in 4-6 sprays on the surface of the water in the toilet bowl BEFORE…the liquid provides a barrier on the water so that no smell escapes from whatever goes into the bowl! Poo-pourri works like magic–can’t wait to try making some of my own!! 🙂
A. Newbom says
Using the original Poo Pourri, I have found 1-3 sprays (max.) on top of the water in the bowl is *more* than sufficient. One spray usually does the job for me. It’s also cheaper and goes farther. It makes sense that Poo Pourri would encourage you to use more, possibly, than you might actually need. After all, they are in business to make money, as well as providing an excellent, effective, and fun product for the customer to enjoy.
Karen says
What kind of bottle did you put this in? Plastic? I tried I with just tea tree oil, that’s all I had but I ordered a variety of essential oils, and the plastic bottle I used stopped working after two days. I was looking at glass bottles on amazon but I’m not sure what to get. Do you think the essential oil is too strong for the plastic? Have you had any problems with your bottles?
Thanks!
Happy.MoneySaver says
I haven’t had any problems with the plastic bottles. The original poo Pourri bottles are also plastic and they work! 🙂
Karen says
I just got my essential oils in the mail today so I can’t wait to mix up a few batches! I got Vitacost brand w/my $10 credit. I know they are not as good quality as the ones you recommend but I thought it was a good way to use my credit on something I wanted to try out.
Karrie says
Great way to save!
Mona says
Since I bought a couple bottles from the Original Poo Pourri
I just re-use the bottles they came in after first rinsing them
out between scents.
Rachel says
Though I have not tried this , I did make some mosquitoe spray, basically same recipe, and I reused my, and my husband’s spray bottles. Buying spray bottles is hit and miss. Some have faulty pumps. You may have to spend a little more:/
annie says
Actually if you used citrus essential oil…lemon, orange, etc., it will eat through the plastic eventually, depending on how much oil versus other ingredients you have. I learned this the hard way. I used plastic cups for my gargling combo and when I got up in the morning, the bottom of the cups had holes in the bottom where some of the oil was still clinging to the plastic. I’ve also learned since you can even do an experiment with lemon oil and a Styrofoam cup. Put oil and water in it and where the oil. sits on top of the water, you will see it starts leaking a whole all the way around the cup. So you don’t want to use plastic with citrus oil, especially if drinking it because it will absorb the chemicals in the plastic as well and guess where they will be going. I learn something new every day it seems, and not always in a good way.
Denise says
I don’t know if they have them where you live, but Whole Foods Markets sell both essential oils and glass spray bottles. I’m going to try that because I was thinking of using a grapefruit essential oil I just came across. So glad I read your comment before mixing up a batch a ruining a plastic spray bottle.
Mari says
If you use darker bottles, the oils will not break down as fast.
Tina says
Since they eat through plastic and Styrofoam, aren’t you concerned about what these oils are doing to your insides?
David says
When my wife does classes on the oils, she’s very careful to let people know how to use oils properly. As the old saying goes, “a little dab’ll do ya!” You don’t need much pure essential oils (like from Young Living) to help with what you’re needing, but you’re also supposed to use the Oil Guide to know how to use each oil. Most oils have numerous uses, and they range from topical, internal, with/without carrier oils (olive, coconut, etc. oil), and in cleaning, cooking, or diffusing. As for eating through plastics etc, that’s actually a good thing when used properly. The natural composition of essential oils, when used rightly, will actually help your body detoxify from all of the harmful chemicals we’re so used to putting in/on our bodies. My wife often tells people to take it slow at first because your body’s not used to the oils. And what with the new FDA regulations, I don’t know how “compliant” this answer is, but I hope it helps you before/if it gets flagged and removed!
SamiamHis says
Ummm, I am not swallowing this homemade product. I am spraying in on the surface of the water in the toilet bowl before I poo. Not too worried about my insides with this product.
Mari says
You can probably use olive oil and it will work since it, too coats the top of the water.
TD says
I would be very worried about your EXPENSIVE plumbing before flushing oils down the toilet. Just saying. After dropping over 5K with plumbing issues,…NOTHING is cheap under that house!
Not at all implying that Poo Pourri will damage your pipes after time but just keep your pipes in mind before trying too many things.
Lisa B says
The oil doesn’t touch your insides, they ae just sprayed in the toilet,
Stellar says
The essential oils will not eat through the plastic bottle they are diluted in enough water for them not to leach through the plastic.
Rosie says
A great quality (think Young Living) essential oil will eat plastic, unless it’s a “surgical grade” plastic.
Crissy says
I heard that you should only use glass bottles for eo’s… Does something change when you mix them with alcohol and water?
Happy.MoneySaver says
Since it is such a small bottle you can use a plastic bottle. But if you were making a larger recipe that would keep for a longer amount of time I would store it in a glass bottle.
Megan says
I know this is late to the party but tea tree oil breaks down rubber and some plastic. How do I know? When my MIL and I saw a dropper bottle top from our tea tree oil had gone the way of the Wicked Witch of the West. It was liquid. Another reason why you need to be extremely care about putting some oils directly on your body. 🙁
Kristen says
Some essential oils will eat petro chemicals. Because the oils are carbon based just like our bodies, they are perfectly safe to put on your skin. However, there are some oils, such as oregano, that are “hot” oils and need to be used with a carrier oil (coconut, olive, almond, etc.). If you find that an oil is irritating your skin, add a bit of carrier oil and you’ll be good to go.
Krys says
I use a glass bottle (go to eBay way cheaper then Amazon) as essential oils can break down plastic.
Danelle says
It’s best to store any product containing essential oils in a glass container. They do degrade plastic over time. Citrus oils, because of their acidity, will break down plastic faster. This won’t happen overnight, but it can clog the sprayer.
A. Newbom says
The essential oils are extremely potent and will break down most plastics unless they are what is called “PET” or “PETE”. This kind of plastic carries one of those words along with a triangle with the number “1” in the triangle. It can usually be found on the bottom of the plastic container in raised lettering, and/or printed somewhere else, like on the label. PET or PEET plastics are an amazing invention. There is a whole story behind them. They can be endlessly recycled into new and very widely varied products, even clothing. These plastics are ideal for use with essential oils and other volatile liquids. For more information, Google PET or PETE plastics and you will probably find something in Wikipedia as well. The alternatives to plastic are amber or cobalt blue or other dark glass bottles–dark to protect the oils from breaking down–or I’ve heard people say they are using aluminum spray bottles. Any of these can be purchased online, with any of a variety of options for lids, sprayers (including trigger sprayers). Bottle companies have a huge variety of colors, sizes, shapes, of many different containers. There are roll-on containers, good for essential oils blended with a carrier oil, so they can be used on skin. Also, lip balm containers–(push-up kind or little “pots”); inhalers, and a wide variety of containers for DIY creams, shampoos, lotions, massage oils, you name it. You can also find a ton of stuff through Amazon…pretty much anything you need for storing your essential oils (sectioned wood, plastic, or cloth boxes and bags)…I recommend wood…just my personal preference; tools for blending, tiny funnels, special “keys” for removing the roller balls from roll-on tubes, all kinds of specialty oils for skin, massage, carrier oils, etc. You can find many kinds/scents and brands of essential oils, fragrance oils, and even diffusers on Amazon. Just do your research on oil brands, purity, quality, and read consumer comments, questions/answers and reviews. Never hesitate to use Google to search for whatever it is you need. Likewise, Amazon is an excellent resource.
Hilda says
Plastic bottles are fine to use. You might need to adjust the spray nozzle. If you repurposed an old bottle that was used for something else, the tubing or spray head might need cleaned and rinsed. Eventually, you will need to replace a plastic bottle, because pure essential oils do break down the walls of plastic bottles. A glass bottle might be a nice long term solution if you plan to continue making and using your own spray, but even the tubing in that will need replaced down the road. The OP did her research, so I’d just go with what she suggests anyway.
I saw someone write something about homemade sprays breeding bacteria faster. I’d like to see your science. Essential oils are used for topical therapy. If they bred bacteria, topical products wouldn’t be possible. Also, the recipe above contains alcohol, which is a disinfectant. That would kill bacteria as well. In place of rubbing alcohol, I’ve also seen witch hazel as a suggestion. It has a slightly woody, Smokey scent, but will provide the same disinfectant purpose, and blends well with pure essential oils and water. A homemade product is more ecologically sound than a purchased brand product. As for kids getting into things, that’s all basic parenting: don’t put it within their reach. Kids are crafty, but parents should be paying attention anyway.

Is that 30-40 drops of each scent or 30-40 drops total of the two combined….like twenty of each.
Happy.MoneySaver says
It is 30-40 drops total. So I used about 20 drops of Lemongrass and 20 drops of peppermint. hope it works as well for you as it did for me! 🙂
Nurse Sherri says
I worked as a registered nurse on a surgery unit. For patients who had trouble urinating that first time after spinal anesthesia (which numbs you for hours from the waist down) we would put peppermint oil in the bed pan or urinal. For a lot of people, it works. For others, we threatened them by simply placing the largest catheter we have on the end table where they can see it, as motivation. Of course we used a much smaller size in reality but they don’t know that… anyway, thought I’d share.

Mrs. Carina Traficante says
I’m also wondering how much water to the given recipe! So far haven’t found an answer except, alittle further reading after the recipe, a 3oz plastic bottle is mentioned. So I assume the recipe measurements of the essential oil & the alcohol then the water in the amount to fill the 3oz bottle. Guess we’ll see once we whip it up! Good luck to us both lol!

Oh, I get it…it goes IN the bowl, not the air!!! Duhhhh!!!! I’d have to figure out some sort of cute instruction tag….anyone clever enough to help me out……hint, hint…wink, wink!!???? 🙂

Can’t wait to try this! So…does this spray come down in a “misty sort of shower” right on you or the toilet? I’m still going thru an odor naturalizer that, if I don ‘t put the lid down prior to sprayin, covers the seat in a thin “love mist”!

Thank you! I ordered $60 worth of Poo-Pourri for Christmas (much to my husband’s chagrin..”why do we need to spend $60 on poop spray?”) and while it works great, I found a lot of their formulas contain lemongrass oil, and it just isn’t my favorite scent. (It’s not bad…just not my favorite)
I’d rather have a lavender-scented “throne”, so now I will! Thanks again for the recipe. 🙂
Shayla says
I love this stuff too! They have a Lavender Vanilla scent that I am newly in love with. I have tried to replicate and it just wasn’t the same unfortunately 🙁
Rita Holmes says
Make sure you use essential oil instead of fragrance oils. There is a huge difference.
Jackie says
For poo spray does it really matter?
Debbi Higgins says
You bet it matters. Essential Oils are NOT created equal, and many you find…even in the health food stores, over the counter, contain only a miniscule amount of pure essential oil. For one thing, you actually save money by using pure essential oils, as you are getting the lifeblood of the plant, and not some alcohol laced fragrance, as used in many craft oils. Also, you are reaping the healthy benefits, each oil provides. My oil of choice is Young Living, but as long as you use a pure essential oil, (there is a very short list) the benefits are amazing…..and you will be infusing beneficial oils into the room, as opposed to toxic ones.
suzie says
There is an alternative to Poo Pourri and it’s much cheaper. It’s called Happy Flush “just before” Air Freshener and works on the same principle as Poo Pourri but has fragrances tailored to the British Market where it is made and sold – mainly fruity fragrances. It also uses a trigger spray – when I tried Poo Pourri once I got to half way down the bottle, it wouldn’t spray so half of the bottle got wasted. Happy Flush is only on sale in the UK at the moment but if you have friends or family there, they can always buy it for you. It only costs £4.99 which is almost half the price of the other brand.
By the way, although you have all thought carefully about how to use esential oils, there is a lot more science to Happy Flush and Poo Pourri than you might think and it mat be safer to buy a product fit for its’ purpose. For example, Happy Flush is all natural and doesn’t contain alcohol, is recyclable and has a child proof lock on it. I love it !
Krys says
Suzie,
You do know that £4.99 is equal to $10 US so it isn’t half the cost it’s the same. It will end up being more as shipping to and from the UK is ridiculously expensive. In addition to avoid wasting half a bottle of anything spray related try turning the trigger so the tube is in the liquid when you tilt it.
Brynn says
I have to totally agree with Suzi. As I work for a company that makes consumer products, please remember what you put you own “poo fighter” as it is not preserved properly like the professional companies (we work with the company who makes Poo-Pourri) and the oils, water and alcohol can easily break down and cause harmful bacteria which can harm children. Just make sure its outs of their reach and used in a reasonable amount of time.
