Today we’re making our very own poo pourri recipe from scratch…. because everyone poops! Or so says the classic children’s book. And because we’re talking about bodily fluids (solids), I’m really feeling a need for my inner 9-year-old scouting self to let the potty jokes fly. That’s what happens when you’re the local Cub Scout Bear leader, I guess. Join with me, this is a safe place.
Every old wench has her own special stench.
We all stink up the loo with our own distinct…
Poo Spray. The most craptastic stuff you’ve ever had the displeasure of needing.
I’ll spare you the rest because it only goes downhill from here.
So, this year for Christmas I bought my husband his own little bottle of poo pourri fragrance spray for the bathroom. He opened it and laughed and I laughed and then it got all awkward and he was like, “What an awesome gag gift!” and I sort of stopped laughing and was like, “Gag gift, nothin’! This is real. REAL!! My years of suffering have finally come to an end!!”
And then it had a permanent place of honor in our bathroom. Anyway, after experiencing this little magic in a bottle I can safely say he’s a fan too.
Poo Pourri Ingredients
After I, ahem, put it to use, I thought I recognized a certain favorite smell: essential oils!! After researching it further, I discovered the poo pourri ingredients are basically comprised of essential oils, alcohol, and water all gussied up in some pretty brilliant packaging. Translation: perfect for an easy DIY’er project.
These poo pourri ingredients work because the essential oils create a physical barrier, trapping the stinky smells below. Basically, you could have a chili cheese dawg blowout nightmare in the bathroom and no one would ever know. EVER. Is that incredible or what? Where was this during my dorm days?
So, I got to work in the lab, errr.. kitchen and came up with a perfect copycat clone.
I’ve had family members try both products (original and homemade) in a double-blind test and the results clearly indicate the DIY is just as effective as the original. In other words, we use them interchangeably and they both work great.
I am a huge fan of DoTerra pure essential oils in all my DIY projects and for health too. The oils they use for the poo pourri ingredients are bergamot essential oil, lemongrass essential oil and orange essential oils. However, I have used all kinds of oil combinations such as lemongrass and peppermint, or lavender and orange. During the holidays I even use a pine smell. If you are interested in buying some of these pure essential oils you can order some here from me.
So, the cost breakdown.

DIY Poo Pourri recipe vs Original Price Comparison
The original big brand costs $9.95 for a 2 oz. container. And that’s not including shipping. That’s $4.98 per ounce.
Our homemade poo pourri recipe version costs the following:
- rubbing alcohol: $.02 (At $2.29 per 16 oz bottle)
- 30-40 drops my favorite brand of essential oils: around $.50 depending on oils used
- Water: Free. Sure, I pay my water bill every month, but it’s a set amount so my bill would be the same whether I make this spray or not.
Total Cost: About $.52 for a 3 oz bottle. Or $.17 per ounce.
You guys. That’s more than a 96% savings!!!!!! And we didn’t even include shipping! Surely if that isn’t the definition of a Happy Money Saver moment, I don’t know what is.
I think this would be the perfect something to leave in a guest bathroom. Isn’t it the worst to have the #2’s hit while you’re at someone else’s home? This is right up there on the essential hosting needs list. Your guests will thank you. And maybe you’ll thank your guests when they put it your poo pourri recipe to use. Win-Win!
DIY Poo Fragrance Spray for the Bathroom
Instructions
- Pour rubbing alcohol in a 3 oz spray container and add essential oils. Add water to fill the container. Give it a good shake and you’re ready to go! I’ve found 3-4 sprays is enough to cover the bowl and trap all of the stink particles below.
- Add water to fill the container.
- Give it a good shake and it's ready for use.
TO USE
- Before you go poo in the toilet, spray on top of the water 3-4 sprays which will create a film, trapping the poo smells after you go. Then do your business and flush.
Let me know your favorite oil combinations—I think it would be fun to create different smells for each season. Summery citrus, woodsy fall, and cinnamon spice for winter. The combinations are endless!

Made it. Used lavender essential oils… This can also be sprayed on linens… I have never bought the original – not a fan of flushing $ down the toilet so I can’t compare. Thank you for this post!

Thank you for posting this recipe. I’ve been using the store bought and I’m so glad to find there is an alternative for that as well. Going to make some soon.

In lieu of the alcohol you can use Polysorbate 20 which I’m pretty sure the PP uses. It will keep the oil suspended evenly throughout and you can buy a big big bottle fairly cheap online.
But those of you that want to skip that altogether, just dropping a few drops of any oil directly onto the water will work just the same if not better since its not diluted.

I like Rosemary Essential oil mixed with lemon, ylang ylang and maybe something else. I did re-use some empty 2 to 4 ounce spray bottles from various products. I copied and pasted images from the real product and an image of Sean Connery. Printed them out on UPS sticky label paper and voila! Gifts for the man in my life’s home and mine. My friend used it as perfume and smelled quite nice! It is essential oil after all. I add a bit of sweet almond oil also and use less drops of essential oil to add to the barrier layer of film on the toilet bowl water. The Sean Connery saying is cute, ends in “smells just like sh*tris!”because of his accent, get it? LOL!!! I would never pay for something soooo easy to make up.

Is tea tree oil considered “essential oil”? I have some of that and lavender oil that I got at the health food store for some kind of hair treatment. Will that work for this?
Happy.MoneySaver says
Yes tea tree oil is considered essential oil. If it is lavender essential oil it should work! 🙂

do you add water to this or you are referring to the water in the toilet bowl. Just one tsp of alcohol to the 40 drops of oil right?
Happy.MoneySaver says
Yes, you do add water to the mixture. Put the alcohol and the oil in the container and then fill the rest of it with water. 🙂

Any idea what makes the original Poo pourr look whitish and you can then see the film on the top of the toilet water. Thanks
Happy.MoneySaver says
Maybe the oils–I am not sure!

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. Must be divine intervention! I was just looking online to buy the “real” thing earlier today. I had planned on putting my order in tonight. Thought I’d get on Pinterest just to see if someone had broken the code. Took 2 minutes to gather and make! Best DIY evah!

Fantastic! I thought the biggest compliment I could give you would be to bring readers to your site. I mentioned this spray in a recent post and linked it to your site. If you don’t like how I have introduced my readers to the “happy money saver.” I could most certainly remove it. But I think you will find it entertaining. This product is a must have. Why didn’t anyone think of this sooner is my question. Love your site!

I’m so happy that someone has finally come up with the recipe for this! I buy my essential oils at Bulk Apothecary online (https://www.bulkapothecary.com), they are super inexpensive and the quality is easily as good as DoTerra! Thank you so much for sharing the recipe.

Did I do something wrong? I got 3oz plastic spray bottles from Target, the mixture (40 drops lemongrass ess oil, tsp rubbing alc, fill to top w/water.) The top of the bottle seems to be melting., colapsing down into the bottle.
Renita says
There are some oils that cannot be used with plastics. You can get ones meant for oils on Amazon or places like Aromatools.com They are about $2 a 2 oz bottle. You can even get them in different colors. Just make sure they are compatible with essential oils.

I am an Essential Oils representative and we have been told that you should never use citrus oils in plastic because it cases the plastic to deteriorate. If you put a drop of citrus oil on a Styrofoam plate there will be a hole in the Styrofoam within a few minutes. You should always use glass bottles.

Thinking of making quite a few of these for FE gifts for my up coming Disney cruise next year. Trying to think of a cute slogan to put on the side of the bottle…
“Winnie you have to Pooh Poo Spray” with a picture of Winnie the Pooh on it.
Any other cute sayings?

I’ve never used “essential oils”. Are they the same as the type of oils used in baking? I guess my question is could I use the peppermint oil sold in supermarkets for this recipe? Thanks for the great idea!
Happy.MoneySaver says
If it says essential oils you could use it but regular cooking flavors are not the same. They are mostly found in natural food stores like Whole Foods but check around for them. These are the ones I use and if you wanted to buy some click here. https://happymoneysaver.com/purchase-doterra-essential-oils/.
