Who’s ready to cook all day long for a month’s worth of freezer meals?
When you tell your family you’re having frozen dinner do they run the other way and only the dog looks happy? Maybe it’s time to introduce them and yourself to homemade Freezer meals. Cooking a month of meals for the freezer all in one day makes for a stress-free and often quick meal time for busy families.
Once upon a time, long, long ago, I used to make a few month’s worth of freezer meals all in one day. Not having to cook for a month was heavenly and I didn’t miss working every day in the kitchen. It has been a few years since those cooking adventures, and I was itching to do it again. Having four children all in after-school dance and sports programs, life is very busy. There are some nights that we don’t get home to eat dinner together until around 7 or 8pm. Last week when I looked around the dinner table and saw everyone eating Cheerios for dinner I decided it was time to do some freezer cooking. 🙂
I know the idea of cooking a month of meals in one day seems impossible or crazy but it can be done. For those of you who don’t want to spend the whole day cooking here is a helpful hint: For Freezer cooking you can try to just double or triple your recipes all the time, eating the one you made for dinner and freezing the others for later. This way you are constantly building your meals.
The other option is you can put on the apron, roll up your sleeves, kiss the kids goodbye, and do freezer cooking all in one day like I did. To take the load off some people even create freezer meal groups with friends, making meals and meeting to swap freezer meals so everyone comes home with a variety of meals. This would be really fun , however I have never done it myself (hint to all my friends out there).
Having a stockpile of Freezer meals is invaluable especially when you get sick for a few days or weeks, have a baby, or just have a hard day and don’t feel like cooking.
The key to Freezer cooking is preparation. If you are prepared it can make all the difference in your busy day.
Cooking Freezer Meals in a Day Process
Step #1 – Go through what you already have. Time to use up some of the food you have on hand to save yourself money. Then you can go through all the sales ads for the week and find things that are on sale or seasonal. After taking those things into consideration make your list of meals you want to make. List them all out! On another sheet of paper list each ingredient you need for each of those meals x how many items.
Step #2 – Go shopping, get all your supplies. Here is my HUGE list of freezer cooking essentials.
Step #3 – Clean your kitchen, prepare your freezer (make room), make sure you have enough dishes & pots. I like having a couple sets of measuring spoons and cups on hand.
Step #4 – Decide on paper the order in which you will cook your meals. This will help you stay focused when you are doing a ton of things at the same time.
Step #5 – Clear your schedule for a day – then cook all day long!
Step #6 – Clean your kitchen – it will be a huge mess, so be prepared….(or better yet, make your spouse do it – it’s only fair…)
I have a regular freezer and a deep freezer. This smaller freezer only held about 30 meals and the other 20 are in my deep freezer.
Here are the FREEZER FRIENDLY meals I made and quantities:
- Honey Lime Chicken (3)
- Homemade Pot Pie (3)
- Fried Rice (5)
- Slow Cooker Broccoli Chicken Alfredo (3)
- Twice Baked Potatoes (3)
- Sweet & Sour Chicken (2)
- Honey Glazed Pork Chops (2)
- Chicken Parmesan Pesto Shells (3)
- Beef Barley Stew (3) – it’s all uncooked ingredients so I can toss into crock pot and cook all day.
- Cilantro Lime Chicken Tacos (2)
- Cafe Rio Pulled Pork for Cafe Rio Salads (3) – recipe is in my cookbook!
- Homemade Hamburger Patties (3) – just mixed bread crumbs, Parmesan, garlic, and onion powder + 1 egg in large batch hamburger. Shaped into patties, layered between freezer paper.
- French Dip Sandwiches (2)
- Stirfry Meat, Veggies + Sauce (3) – I had a bag of stir fry veggies already. To a second bag added raw chicken in slices and a stirfry sauce.
- Chicken Enchiladas (3)
- Lasanga (3) – my own recipe!
- Pulled BBQ Pork for buns (2) – slow cooked pork roast, shred and add bottle of BBQ sauce
- Chimichangas (2) – shredded chicken, spanish rice and cheese added to large burrito, and folded. These are bagged up so they can be fried.
Grand Total = 50 Meals all cooked in one day
I also made homemade breakfast burritos – using hash browns, bacon, eggs and cheese. Those will be perfect for some quick breakfast meals.
Making a ton of freezer meals all in one day can be extremely rewarding and save you a lot of time.

We – a groove of six of us – have been meal swap -ingredients for three years. We could so do this.
We each cook every other week four four person servings of an ENTREE. Equals sixteen servings. We dish up. Any even number of girls works. So three cooks four meals equals EVERYBODY with two dinners for the week.
We love it.
We could do it every week but things seem to work well for us this way.
Nothing fancy or over the top. Just dinner. We all have like children and like busy lives.
But the freezer meals sound amazing.

How many people do your freezer meals serve? I have 4 kiddos who seem to be growing and eating more by the day! I am wondering if you have found that you have plenty to go around?

My freezer meals are for a family of 6 usually…but sometimes we go through 1 1/2 amounts of honey lime chicken since now I have two teenagers. When I portion out my meals I always try to think about how much we will eat. One pot pie is not enough for us anymore, we need 2 of those now as well. My lasagna can feed us all though.

I am so excited to see some fresh ideas for freezer meals! I started a ministry at our local church to bring meals to people who are in need, i.e.: someone in the family is in the hospital, a death in the family, a new baby. This takes stress off the family members while going through a hard time. Some of the women in our church got together on a Saturday, and we cooked over 30 meals in 4 hours! I kept them in my freezer, and when the needs arise, we already have great, homemade tasty meals to offer without having to call a million people to see if they might be able to help cook for someone. We are all busy and when things like emergencies happen, they are not always convenient to help someone out. Doing the freezer meals helps everyone involved, we already have something ready if someone is in need, just pick up a salad and bread and deliver the meals to the family in need. It has already been a huge blessing to everyone, and all the people who cooked had a great time laughing and getting to know each other better than just Hi in church on Sunday morning. We are planning a get-together in October to do some more, and I am happy to have some more new things to try! Glad I stumbled upon this site! 🙂

We did this a couple weeks ago and although I was exhausted afterwards it has been so worth it! In fact we had the Honey Lime Chicken last night! Both me and my mom do WW so we also added in the points for each serving on the package! We lived by our master to-do list so there was never a “what should I be doing?” moment.
Also I’d recommend shopping the day before and prepping the meats the day before as well. It was nice to start the cooking day w all the chicken cut, pork chops trimmed, etc. We had both of our crockpots going w the same recipe for chili the whole time we were cooking and then it was for dinner cooking night as well.

I have never done that but a frequent goal when I was first married was to bake 50 loaves of whole wheat bread in a weekend using 3 or four bowls and a standard home oven. It was a great couple experience. As part of the process we would crank up the heat to 85+ degrees F and dress in shorts and T-shirts. The heat made the bread raise faster. At the end of the weekend my arms felt like I had been on a marathon of weight lifting at the gym and I had lost about 10 pounds, likely of water from perspiration but our chest freezer was full with 50 loaves of great bread.

How many hours does it take to cook all of these meals in a day? I am trying to figure out how long it would take to cook enough for 5-6 meals/day for 7 days. Thanks!

Does anyone have any tips for freezer cooking and freezing in something other than disposable containers (I’m trying to reduce usage of plastics and aluminum for health and waste considerations)? I really like the idea of the freezer cooking and hope to try this soon!

I read somewhere the suggestion of stoneware.

I have been freezer cooking for years! Your menu looks great and even though my kids are grown and gone, I will try some of them. Btw, I always froze individual meatloafs and cassaroles using muffin tins. The kids would pop one or two into the microwave for a quick meal or snack.

Hi, I love this idea. I freezed a bunch of meals to take camping this summer. One of them was Butter Chicken (I use yogurt instead of heavy cream so I did not add it to the chicken until it was warmed to prevent it from separating) and another was doing up the taco meat with refried beans so only the sides had to be prepared. Love your suggestions for meals. I’m going to try a few more. I also make a brown rice and lentil main that tastes great after freezing. You only have to brown some onions and serve it with pain yogurt. Then there is good old fashioned mac and cheese. Thanks again.

I’ve been tempted to do freezer meals for a while, now that I found this set of recipes and it is hunting season I’m thinking a great combination is about to form. I love cooking and baking, but doing it while a baby just learning to walk is running around is not on the top of my list. I think with all the helpful comments ad recipes my son will be going to grandma’s for a day while mommy cooks up a storm. Thanks for all the great recipes, an if someone has a good pizza crust recipe they could send me that would be amazing, definitely want to make a bunch of mini pizzas.

I am so excited to start. I have never done freezer meals before and I am just hoping it all fits into my freezer I only have the freezer above my fridge so hopefully it all fits thank you for doing this. People are asking for a list I used food on the table online and just put in the recipes and then added them to my meal plan the amount of times listed and then when I was done it puts it into a grocery list and I juSt went through and deleted the things off the list that I already had or combined. Hope that helps

I love these suggestions. I am just getting into the who domestic side of things. It’s just me and my husband and I am only now feeling like a life of restaurants and quick meals is not really for us. We live in a country where restaurant life is fairly norm. As an experiment, I will make all the meals (minus the pork since we cannot easily get it). Time to start making meals again since I actually love the feeling of cooking for myself and just seemed to have forgotten that for a while. So excited to try everything!

I was wondering if you freeze veggies. It is cheaper to buy fresh veggies and I was going to cut them up and freeze them. Thank you!

#6 on your list of steps, what do I do if she helps me? Should I still have her clean up the kitchen? No, that’s what daughters are for 😉
Thanks, great ideas her.

I really want to do this, but I have a question about ingredients. I would like to buy a big bag of frozen chicken breasts at Sam’s Club and divide it up to use in several different recipes. My question is, since they come frozen, would it be ok/safe to thaw them all out and then place them into the recipes and re-freeze? Or would you advise keeping them frozen and putting them in the recipes, then freeze the whole meal? I’m just wondering about how freezing chicken, thawing and then re-freezing would affect it. Any thoughts would be much appreciated! Thanks!
Karrie says
Hi Katie, I never like to freeze something and refreeze it again. So start with fresh chicken breasts if possible. OR, have every other ingredient ice cold and add in your frozen chicken breasts and quickly freeze the meal so the chicken doesn’t really thaw.

keeping this in my bookmarks window. I will be going in for surgery in september and this is the perfect way of feeding the family and not having to cook (or be forced to have what my husband cooks). I will have to wait for school to start before I start cooking.

OH MY GOSH! I don’t know why I never thought to do this before. This is really great!! Thanks a bunch!
